“He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding.” – Proverbs 15:32

Pay Attention to Discipline

It wasn’t easy as a 13-year-old to be yelled at. It wasn’t easy to have to do push-ups every time I missed a layup. It wasn’t easy to be the brunt of criticism by an intense coach every time I turned the ball over. But, as a basketball player for my local club team, every time I was disciplined, I pushed ahead and tried to play better the next time.

Believe me, it was difficult going to practice sometimes, especially when I knew I was going to receive criticism. However, I became a better basketball player because of it. I learned that working hard at correcting mistakes would improve my basketball skills.

Proverbs reminds us that ignoring discipline will only be disastrous! I know that it’s difficult to be corrected, but God is showing His love for us by His discipline. “…The Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in” (Proverbs 3:12).

Spend time in the Word and ask God what changes He might like to see in your life, and listen to Him! It’s not easy to make changes, and it often hurts, but remember that God is demonstrating His love for you and that He wants what’s best for you.
