Around the Net: Liberty University Truck Series driver sets new rookie record

If Camping World Truck Series driver William Byron doesn’t slow down, his number of race wins may soon surpass his age.

On July 30 — last Saturday — the 18-year-old won his fifth series race of the season at the Pocono Mountain 150 — setting a new rookie record for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Amid his racing career, Byron, a native of Charlotte, has also taken online classes through Liberty University and sports the Liberty logo on all of his gear, apparel and vehicles. After graduating from high school last spring, Byron plans to attend Liberty as a residential student in the fall.

Back in March of this year, Liberty invited Byron to speak at their Convocation — “North America’s largest weekly gathering of Christian students, [which] each year plays host to more than 80 guest speakers of national significance from every sphere of society,” according to Liberty’s website.

In Byron’s speech at the Convocation (featured in the video below), he talked about the opportunities he’s received, given the success he’s already had in his young racing career.

“Winning the championship last year was really an amazing opportunity for me to spread my faith and talk about Liberty at each racetrack we visited throughout the year,” Byron said.

Those opportunities to share his faith should only increase as Byron continues his torrid pace around the racetrack.
