“Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” – 1 Kings 19:11-12

Listening to His Voice

In order to see God’s clear plan for our lives, we need to be willing to listen to His voice. In this story, Elijah was listening and waiting for the voice of the Lord, which came in the most unexpected ways! Wouldn’t you have expected God’s voice to be booming out of the windstorm? Or crashing through the earth with the quake? What about raging through the flames of the fire? After all, Moses heard God through the burning bush, right? But no, God whispered quietly to Elijah after the chaos happened around him.

Are you willing to wait and hear the gentle, still voice of God? What might He be saying to you that maybe you’ve been too busy or too distracted to hear? If we want clarity and direction from the wisdom that God offers, we need to be willing to wait, be still, and listen to the gentle whisper He gives.
