Devotional of the Week: Don’t Lose Heart

“Alas, Sovereign LORD,’I said,‘I do not know how to speak; I am too young.’ But the LORD said to me, ‘Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,’ declares the LORD.” Jeremiah 1:6-7

Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly has waged a very public battle against cancer, which he was first diagnosed with on June 3, 2013.

Through all of this, he has used it as an opportunity to share his faith in Christ. Highs or lows, he has shared how he is trusting in God.

When dealing with a disease like cancer, it’s easy to lose heart because the “c” word carries so much weight, mentally. We can worry about the present and future, and wonder if we did anything in the past to cause something like this dreaded disease, but ultimately everything is in God’s hands.

Like II Corinthians 4:16 says, though, we don’t have to lose heart even though we are or will be dealing with things (cancer or something else) that hurt us physically. The one way to stay on the attack is to renew our inward man each day. And the only way to do that is to spend time with God, each day.

May you rest in God’s presence, and then His comfort (from His Word), and then His peace that He provides when you spend time with Him.
