12:55 – I grab a pizza for us to eat from Capriccio’s. It’s one of the best places in Charlotte to get pizza. Get the Sicilian pizza. It’s HUGE!
1:15 – I hate how the NCAA is calling this round the second round. That means 60 teams got a bye.

7:00 – While Kentucky is under way with their game, we decide that it’s time to shoot more basketball outside. My buddy Eric used to play basketball with some of his not so athletic friends back in high school. They would call themselves “And None.” And One was the talented group of basketball players who traveled the world and play an entertaining form of streetball. The bracket madness is here! A second Christmas for college basketball fans. I’ve decided to go with the running diary format ala Bill Simmons (and many others) for the first two days of the tournament. With so many games going on at once it’s pretty hard to make critical observations.
I’m gonna break these up into day caps and night caps, so we will have two parts posted by the end of the day. By the way you can follow me on Twitter @pplcallmeblue for live thoughts and discussion.

The Zeller brothers have fired up their hometown of Washington, Ind. for March Madness. People throughout the town have been seen wearing Tar Heel blue or Indiana crimson in support of Washington’s favorite sons. Zeller jerseys have been flying off the racks…
Tyler Zeller
Tyler Zeller has been named Second-Team All-America by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). Tyler is also this year’s ACC Player of the Year, an award a North Carolina senior has not won since Phil Ford in 1978.
Tyler and the North Carolina Tar Heels earned a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament and will face the No. 16 seed (winner between Lamar and Vermont in the First Four).

Cody Zeller
Cody Zeller and the Indiana Hoosiers earned a No. 4 seed and will play the 13th seeded New Mexico State Aggies in the NCAA tournament. Cody helped IU get their first Big Ten conference tournament win since 2006 last week and their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2008.
Cody is the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and appears in the current Winter 2012 DigiMag issue of Sports Spectrum. A four-page feature on Cody is also in our upcoming Spring 2012 issue. Click here to subscribe.

344 schools began play this November with the hope of becoming one of the 68 teams to reach the NCAA tournament and compete for a national championship in men’s basketball. And now we are just a few days away from Selection Sunday. And when Greg Gumbel, Greg Anthony, Seth Davis, Kenny “The Jet” Smith and Sir Charles Barkley appear on CBS to reveal the brackets, there will be many teams who didn’t win an automatic bid through their conference tournaments who will be sweating it out to see if they will be headed to the big dance, or depressingly, to the NIT tournament. These teams are called bubble teams, which is our theme of the week. Another week in the books for college basketball. We are inching ever closer to the greatest sporting event in America: MARCH MADNESS. Last year, we held a Sports Spectrum bracket contest for Madness. I can’t remember who actually won that contest, or what the person won, but we will be holding another bracket contest this year. The winner will get a nice Sports Spectrum prize package, details will be available as we get closer to the NCAA tournament.

The commenter’s main problem is that some of the games listed, mainly any game Wisconsin is involved in, is not “fun to watch.” So, due to the personal request of mdgordon07, here are my top 5 most exciting teams to watch in college basketball.

Let me start out admitting that I was way off on Monday night’s BCS National Title Game. I thought LSU would give us a repeat result of what happened in Tuscaloosa, but Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide completely outcoached and outplayed Les Miles and LSU.
But enough of college football, let’s move from a sport with the worst postseason system in the world to the sport with the best, college basketball.
The strangest story so far in this college basketball season has involved the head coach of St. Joseph’s, Phil Martelli, and former player, Todd O’Brien. The Hawks have had a resurgent year and currently have an 11-5 record. They have a good chance of building a good enough resume to get back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008. But this story has brought a lot of bad press to St. Joe’s.
O’Brien has graduated from St. Joe’s and wants to use his last year of eligibility at UAB, but his former coach won’t let him… Continue reading
