Carolina Panthers long-snapper JJ Jansen looked at me from across the table. He had an intense strain in his eyes. I noticed sweat forming on his nose. His leg started to shake, causing our coffees to rattle on the table as if there was a coming storm. I looked at him, confused. “Stephen,” he said, “I have something to tell you.” “Yes?” I said...

Mason Plumlee looks out over the floor at Duke University’s practice facility. It must be weird to be back—returning to campus, his home for the last four years; visiting Cameron Indoor, Duke’s 2010 national championship banner hanging in the rafters of its gymnasium that feels more like a cathedral, with its wooden steeple doors and castle-stone exterior; and sitting here in Duke’s practice facility where his new team, the Brooklyn Nets, are having training camp...

To whom much is given, much is required. Nicole Jennings says those words with a deep passion, referencing Luke 12:48, which is also the motto for the Greg Jennings Foundation...

The phone rang. It was sometime in 2008 and Pat Hill, then Fresno State’s football coach, was calling to see how David Carr, the oldest of son of Rodger and Sheryl Carr, was doing. David was a former Fresno State record-setting quarterback who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 NFL draft by the expansion Houston Texans and was featured on the cover of Sports Spectrum that year...

The last time we had a Detroit Tiger on our cover was Travis Fryman in our May 1996 issue. Read his story below... Travis Fryman's dream had come true. He found himself in the visitor's clubhouse at Fenway Park--covered with ketchup, mustard, and every other condiment that could be rustled up from Fenway concession stands. Some wise guy had come up with two eggs that were added to the mix, along with some Coke and cold coffee. Yellow ooze was dripping from Fryman's hair and into his eyebrows. This was the fulfillment of a dream? Click here to read the remainder of Travis Fryman's story.

Being able to play in the NBA is the biggest privilege anyone could ever ask for, but for me it is the greatest opportunity I have been given to spread the Gospel to people. There are many people who look up to me, figuratively and physically, and I know I can have an impact on them. My goal every day is to handle myself in a Gospel-centered manner and be able to show my faith to people through my actions. When I get the opportunity, there is no greater joy than to be able to share the Gospel with someone. The forgiveness that I have been able to receive through Christ is the greatest gift I have ever received in my life, and I love being able to help others be able to receive that gift, or just simply give them encouragement in their faith. There are challenges along the way, but I wouldn’t give up that gift for any challenge, difficulty or anything the world can offer...

Jason Avant is used to dodging defenders as a receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles. But before he made it to the NFL he had to literally dodge bullets. Twice he was cornered by rival gangs as a youngster growing up in Chicago. And the house he lived in was shot up numerous times. His mother left him as a toddler and his dad was in and out of prison. But the former Gangster Disciple is now a disciple of Christ and has developed into one of the Eagles’ steadiest receivers...

Each time David Akers was cut by his last two NFL teams, his departure oddly followed deep runs by his teams in the playoffs. It...
